Sean invites Lisa back to his flat for a drink. Lisa says she's Norwegian. Is Sean Norwegian too? In this dark, funny encounter two outsiders reach out to each other across the deep fjords of the heart.

“In Norway we're used to darkness in people's heads. We even prefer it. Because if there is no darkness then what in heaven's name are you thinking about? We Norwegians think people who are happy are perhaps just a little above themselves, don't you?”

Director  Alexander Butt
Cast Katy Curtain and David Woodland
Late Show 9th - 21st June
The Old Fitzroy Theatre

REVIEWS

"A brilliantly written comedic text is so enhanced by actors who create believable and rich characters that the result is a neat little show that is worth the effort to get there." - Sydney Arts Guide

"It's funny and engaging, and will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy when the play is over. A great play to see with a date."  - Weekend Notes

"The performances are good and the piece is entirely charming. Beautifully written and well-acted vignette that sends you into the night with a smile and an ’80s pop classic ringing in your head." - Jason Blake

"A great script, great comic acting. I wanted more." - Theatre Now

"The natural discomfort of strange encounters is expressed well, under Alexander Butt’s direction. The eagerness for affirmation and the urgent need to gratify primal urges, libidinal and otherwise, are presented with accuracy and good humour. Butt finds pleasure in the cheekiness of the writing, and works at creating laughs through a varied range of methods, which prevents the show from the threat of becoming a one trick pony.Curtain and Woodland are at home on the stage, and we are delighted to be in their company." - Suzy Goes See

"A beautifully performed light piece that surprises you with its depth. Under Alex Butt's direction Being Norwegian is very funny, the kind of theatre that makes you laugh out loud regularly, and he’s drawn wonderful performances from his talented cast of David Woodland and Katy Curtain who have the perfect chemistry for the attraction-that-can’t-overcome-akwardness plot line." - Lisa Thatcher

"In a world chockablock with all kinds of pretensions (professional, political, social, theatrical, you name it), a harmlessly beguiling little play, like Being Norwegian, comes as a breath of very fresh air and reminds us that, given a good script and a couple of decent actors, little else, if anything, is needed, to ensure a good night at the theatre. BN is the outgoing late show at ye Ol’ Fitz and it’s a pity it couldn’t have hung ’round longer. Directed sharply by Alex Butt and played to a tee by Katy Curtain & David Woodland, this is the one-night stand that gets stood up by Sean’s inability to man up. It and he are loveable and very recognisable." - Lloyd Bradford Syke
